"Light" Final

Through this short series, I’m narrating a story about the desire, struggle, and accomplishment to be connected with the earth. Using high key lighting to symbolize nature, and giving the phrase, “walking into the light” a whole new meaning. Most people understand that phrase as dying or dead. The way I used it is that “light” is life; and instead of “walking”, I’m attempting to connect to Mother Earth and be at peace to feel alive.

This is my first image, and for the most part I believe is pretty much done. I'd like to do this to my other images, but throughout the narrative I'll be adding more layers of flowers to push my concept even more. And here are the other images I will be working with, but are variable to changing.

A2 Final_ The Elephant Stampede

My goal with these images was to create a stampede of toy elephants going through and making themselves comfortable in our city, Sarasota. The toy elephants that I used for this project are very tiny, no bigger than an inch off the ground; so it was quite a challenge to photograph. I chose to go with a square format because when I imagined them in my head, I saw these images going into a realistic children's book. However, creating six fully-completed images by deadline was difficult. To be able to have all six completed, these images are basically rough-edits. For the final project, I'm going to edit down to three and fine-tune them to perfection!

These are the images I have done so far, although they do have some more retouching to do. But three down, three more to go!

Proposal to Assignment 2

The idea and concept is still in thought process, but so far I have the idea of creating an elephant stampede into an environment of plain, ordinary, and mundane scenes of city and town life. I have tiny elephant figures that i'll shoot in the studio and transfer them into the suburban/urban locations I choose to use.

Fairy Tale Postcards (final)

My favorite fairy tale has always been Cinderella since I was little and I’ve always enjoyed fairy tale stories and they’re new versions over the years. So naturally, I’d be interested in this project right on the spot. Also, last semester I took a Children’s Literature class, which for a part time we concentrated on children’s fairy tales. However, they were not made up to be told children; but for adults and to entertain the listening audience. And the versions that are told now are not what they used to be at all. The Grimm’s Brothers has written several versions of Cinderella, but each one is more censored than the last. I chose the most recent version.

There are several symbols in the story of Cinderella that represent all sorts of details that had been censored for children. My goal with these postcards was to emphasize on the symbols that are from the Grimm’s Brothers version, but incorporate the fluff and puff of what appeals children to fairy tales. Such as, pastel/light colors and glitter. I kept each postcard really simple and consistency is really important in my design. However, I didn’t want so much consistency to where each card doesn’t have its own individuality.

It's a lot of work and a huge time sucker, but I'm really enjoying this project :-)

Process(step 1) on Fairy Tale Postcards

I'm not the best illustrator, but these are generally what I have in mind for my assignment. I've altered my proposal a bit (check previous post for full update). My focus to these postcards are the main symbols of this particular Cinderella version by the Brother's Grimm; and through these symbols I tell the story of Cinderella and her "rags to riches" stories.

Proposal to Fairy Tale Postcards

I've decided to do the Brother's Grimm most recent version of Cinderella.

The Disney version is not really anything like the Brother's Grimm tale; although they both have almost the same highlights.

Young Cinderella's mother dies, leaving the father to re-marry. Then comes in the evil step-mother and her evil daughters; who of course don't treat her as a family member but more so of a maid/servant who does all of the dirty work around the house. Then the king's invitation comes mentioning the three day dance festival in the kingdom. Cinderella isn't allowed to go, but thanks to her mother's grave with the magical tree, she receives a beautiful dress. She dances and dazzles the prince but mysteriously disappears leaving him stumped of her identity. And this continues each day of the festival. On the third day, the prince is clever enough to pull a trick causing Cinderella to leave her golden shoe behind. Giving the prince the chance to find her, which of course he does and they get married and live in the kingdom happily ever after.

My idea for this postcards project is to mainly focus on the high points of the tale, and follow the story exactly. My goal for these postcards is to relay the story chronologically, so the post cards come as a package and they work better as a series than individuals. The way I want to present the story is by focusing on the specific details that the Brother's Grimm version has, appose to the Disney version. I'm taking symbols from the story and making them main images to describe the fairy tale.

The majority of my images will be cut outs and scrap-booking materials via scanning; along with using some textures via scanning. Also, I'm toying with the idea of possibly using paint or something like that.

Exercise 1

This exercise, we learned to use the pen tool in photoshop to create cut-outs.
